Main Features And Approaches To medical Waste Management

Medical waste is a hazardous waste material produced because of healthcare activities. This waste can be a problem for both public health and the environment as well. Waste management of the same is a method followed by the hospitals to reduce the waste produced and find ways to recycle it to reduce the costs of disposal and expenses of new materials.

The main approaches and features of waste management are as follows:

1. All types of medical waste left after the procedure of healthcare activities must be treated before the disposal.

2. Medical wastes include sharp materials like syringes and needs used in diagnosis, treatment, testing and immunization, and biohazardous materials.

3. Medical waste should never be confused with:

Waste produced in food processing which doesn’t contain blood, blood products or infectious agent.

Medical elements like cotton and paper towels because they are not bio-hazardous.

Household waste

The waste produced by livestock handling on farms

4. There are some methods approved for medical waste management and they are generators, incineration, microwave technology, and steam sterilization.

It is very important to manage medical waste because exposure to this biohazardous or infectious agents can cause many diseases. The procedure for handling sharp wastes is reusable containers. These containers are transported to a permitted station or a facility off-site for processing. These containers can reduce medical waste by eliminating the weight of the container that can be used only once.

Medical waste may be disposed of without treating it to a public sewage system if the waste is not biohazardous. It can be semi-liquid or liquid but should contain any infectious agents, blood products, blood, and any harmful gases. The liquid can be treated with a chemical disinfection process before it gets discharged in case if it contains biohazardous material.
